How to Evolve Eevee in Pokémon GO: Every Name Trick and Method

Eevee has eight possible evolutions in Pokémon GO, and left alone it evolves into one of the first three at random. If you want a specific form, you either use a one-time nickname trick or meet that form’s evolution condition. This guide covers the nickname for each Eeveelution, the repeatable method once you’ve spent that nickname, and how the leveling rework changed previous requirements.

Every evolution costs 25 Eevee Candy.

The Eevee Name Trick: All Eight Nicknames

Rename your Eevee to one of the names below before you evolve it. When the name is set correctly, the silhouette on the Evolve button changes to that Eeveelution; check for it before spending your candy.

Each nickname works only once per account. After you’ve used a name, that Eeveelution goes back to its normal method (below), so save your trick for an Eevee worth keeping, such as a Shiny or one with strong IVs for the league you play.

Repeatable Methods (After the Name Trick Is Used)

Once your one-time nickname is spent, each Eeveelution has its own condition. These work as many times as you want.

Espeon and Umbreon

Set Eevee as your Buddy and walk 10 km with it. Then, while it’s still your active Buddy, evolve it:

• Daytime → Espeon
• Nighttime → Umbreon

If Eevee isn’t your current Buddy when you tap Evolve, you’ll get a random result instead.

Leafeon and Glaceon

Stand within range of an active Lure Module and evolve:

• Mossy Lure → Leafeon
• Glacial Lure → Glaceon

The Lure can be your own or one another player has placed on a nearby PokéStop.

Sylveon

Set Eevee as your Buddy and earn 70 hearts (the Great Buddy level), then evolve. Hearts come from feeding, playing, walking, and battling together, and reset daily, making this a multi-day process unless an event lowers the requirement.

Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon

The original three have no repeatable trigger. After you’ve used their name tricks, a plain evolution returns a random one of the three. The only reliable way to get a specific one again is to catch enough Eevee that the odds work out, so tap every Eevee you see.

The Leveling Rework: What Changed

Advancing through levels in Pokémon GO previously required completing specific Level-Up Research tasks alongside experience points. For Level 42, one of these tasks was evolving Eevee into each of its eight unique forms.

On October 15, 2025, the developer launched the “New Leveling Journey” update (see the official leveling update details), which modified the leveling progression structure:

• Level-Up Research Removed: The specific leveling tasks for Levels 41 through 50 were removed. Progression through these levels now relies entirely on experience points.
• New Level Cap: The maximum trainer level cap increased from Level 50 to Level 80.
• Tasks Pushed Back: Level-Up Research tasks were shifted to higher levels. You now only encounter specialized research challenges once you cross into the final stretch from Levels 71 to 80.

Because of this change, players no longer need to evolve all eight Eeveelutions to reach Level 42. However, knowing the repeatable methods remains essential for filling your Pokédex, building competitive teams, and completing the higher-level challenges later on.

• Does the name trick keep working? No. Each name guarantees its Eeveelution only the first time you use it on your account. After that the same name evolves randomly.
• Do I still need to evolve every Eevee to reach Level 42? No. The leveling update on October 15, 2025, removed all Level-Up Research tasks for Levels 41 through 50. Eevee evolutions are no longer required to advance.
• Can I get a Shiny Eeveelution from the wild? No, you evolve a Shiny Eevee into one. This is exactly when the one-time name trick earns its keep: use it to steer a Shiny or high-IV Eevee into the form you want instead of gambling on a random result.
