Origin Forme Giratina is a Ghost / Dragon Legendary that appears in five-star raids. It is weak to Dark, Dragon, Fairy, Ghost and Ice attacks, and a 100% IV Origin Forme Giratina from a raid is 2105 CP, or 2631 CP when weather boosted.
This Origin Forme Giratina raid guide covers which counters to bring, which ones last longest, how many players you need, and the two weather types that boost both your team and your catch.

What isn’t stated
- The listing doesn’t say whether Shiny odds are higher than a normal five-star raid.
- There is no official list of the raid boss’s moves. You see them when Giratina uses them in battle.
- Halloween 2026 Part I (October 27 to November 1) adds no raid-specific bonuses, but its GO Pass unlocks 2× Candy at Rank 10, worded for all catches. See the Halloween 2026 Part 1 guide.
Best Origin Forme Giratina Counters
Five weaknesses means a wide choice of counters. Community simulations from GO Hub rank Dragon attackers highest, followed by Dark, Ice and Ghost. These are the top ten from their counters list:
| # | Counter | Fast Move | Charged Move | Type of damage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mega Rayquaza | Dragon Tail | Breaking Swipe | Dragon |
| 2 | Eternatus | Dragon Tail | Dynamax Cannon | Dragon |
| 3 | Mega Dragonite | Dragon Tail | Outrage | Dragon |
| 4 | Mega Houndoom | Snarl | Dark Pulse | Dark |
| 5 | Mega Garchomp | Dragon Tail | Breaking Swipe | Dragon |
| 6 | Black Kyurem | Dragon Tail | Freeze Shock | Dragon / Ice |
| 7 | White Kyurem | Ice Fang | Ice Burn | Ice |
| 8 | Shadow Darkrai | Snarl | Foul Play | Dark |
| 9 | Mega Mewtwo Y | Psycho Cut | Shadow Ball | Ghost |
| 10 | Shadow Garchomp | Dragon Tail | Breaking Swipe | Dragon |
Counter rankings are from the GO Hub Giratina (Origin Forme) counters database and raid guide. Mega Mewtwo Y ranks on its Ghost-type Shadow Ball, not its Psychic moves, which are neutral against Giratina.
Easier-to-build Origin Forme Giratina counters
If you don’t have the Pokémon above, these non-Legendary options rank in GO Hub’s top 25:
| Counter | Fast Move | Charged Move | Type of damage | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shadow Haxorus | Dragon Tail | Breaking Swipe | Dragon | Shadow |
| Shadow Salamence | Dragon Tail | Outrage | Dragon | Shadow |
| Shadow Dragonite | Dragon Tail | Outrage | Dragon | Shadow |
| Shadow Tyranitar | Bite | Brutal Swing | Dark | Shadow |
| Shadow Hydreigon | Dragon Breath | Brutal Swing | Dragon / Dark | Shadow |
| Baxcalibur | Ice Fang | Glaive Rush | Ice / Dragon | No Mega or Shadow needed |
| Mega Tyranitar | Bite | Brutal Swing | Dark | Mega |
| Mega Absol | Snarl | Brutal Swing | Dark | Mega |
| Mega Gengar | Lick | Shadow Ball | Ghost | Mega |
| Mega Salamence | Dragon Tail | Draco Meteor | Dragon | Mega |
| Mega Greninja | Feint Attack | Brutal Swing | Dark | Mega |
Regular (non-Shadow) Tyranitar, Hydreigon, Garchomp and Gengar still deal super effective damage, but they rank lower, so plan on bringing an extra player or two. For why the Shadow versions hit harder, see Shadow vs. Purified.
What the Community Has Documented
- Group size: GO Hub’s counters database estimates about 2 to 3 trainers with top counters. Its raid guide is more cautious: 3 to 6 high-level players, or 6 or more with lower-level counters.
- Estimates, not guarantees: GO Hub notes its faint and time-to-win numbers leave out Friendship and Mega damage boosts, so a real lobby usually goes faster than the simulation.
- Possible moves: GO Hub lists Origin Forme Giratina’s moves as Shadow Claw and Dragon Tail, plus Ominous Wind, Shadow Ball, Shadow Force and Dragon Pulse. Ghost and Dragon counters take super effective damage from these. Dark counters resist the Ghost moves, and Fairy counters resist the Dragon moves.
- Shadow Force: GO Hub describes Shadow Force as a Legacy move available only with an Elite Charged TM, so your caught Giratina won’t have it by default.
- Shiny odds: community sources report Shiny Origin Forme Giratina is available. Players have long reported Shiny Legendary raid odds of roughly 1 in 20.
- IV floor: raid catches are widely reported to have at least 10 in each IV. That puts an unboosted Origin Forme Giratina between 2018 and 2105 CP, and a boosted one between 2523 and 2631 CP.
Practical Application: Match Your Team to the Weather
Origin Forme Giratina is boosted by Fog and Windy. Both of those also boost one of its weaknesses, so on either day your team and your catch get the boost together.
Example: it’s Foggy. Fog boosts Dark attacks, so your Tyranitar and Hydreigon hit harder, and Dark types resist Giratina’s Ghost moves, so they last longer too. Giratina is also boosted, so your catch is Level 25 with a maximum of 2631 CP. On a Windy day, switch to Dragons: they get the boost instead, and the catch is still 2631 CP max. On a Cloudy or Snowy day your Fairy or Ice counters are boosted, but the catch is Level 20 with a maximum of 2105 CP.
A few rules follow from this:
- Foggy: lead with Dark. Boosted damage, and they resist the Ghost half of Giratina’s moveset.
- Windy: lead with Dragon. The same top counters as Palkia, so if you built Dragons for the Palkia raids, bring them back.
- Expect your Dragons to faint. Giratina’s Dragon moves hit them super effectively. Fill your backup team with more Dragons or with Dark types.
- Use your Mega first. Mega Tyranitar has the fewest faints in GO Hub’s top 25. Activate a Mega Evolution before joining to boost damage for everyone in the lobby.
- Check CP on the catch screen. 2105 (or 2631 when boosted) is a 100% IV Origin Forme Giratina. Use a Golden Razz Berry if you see it.
- Save some Candy for the next night. The Gastly Spotlight Hour with 2× Evolution XP is Thursday, October 29. See the Gastly Spotlight Hour guide to plan both nights together.
Tracking Your Giratina Catches
After a Raid Hour it is easy to lose track of which Giratina was the high-IV one, which you planned to power up, and which you want to use an Elite TM on.
A tracker like GoDex helps. Scan a catch screenshot to read CP and IVs, tag the keeper, and mark a Shiny as soon as you get one.
