Dialga is a Steel / Dragon Legendary that appears in five-star raids. It is weak only to Fighting and Ground attacks, and a 100% IV Dialga from a raid is 2307 CP, or 2884 CP when weather boosted.
This Dialga raid guide covers which counters to bring, how many players you need, and how weather changes both the fight and the catch.
When Dialga Is in Raids
Dialga is in five-star raids from Wednesday, October 14, 12:00 a.m. to Tuesday, October 20, 11:59 p.m. local time, according to the official events calendar. What isn’t stated
- The official listing says only “Dialga” and doesn’t name a forme. Check the raid screen. The numbers in this guide are for standard Dialga.
- The listing doesn’t say whether Shiny odds are higher than a normal five-star raid.
- There is no official list of the raid boss’s moves. You see them when Dialga uses them in battle.
Best Dialga Counters
Dialga resists eight types, so only Fighting and Ground attackers do well. Community simulations from GO Hub rank Fighting highest, followed by Ground. These are the top ten from their counters list:
| # | Counter | Fast Move | Charged Move | Type of damage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mega Mewtwo X | Counter | Dynamic Punch | Fighting |
| 2 | Mega Lucario | Force Palm | Aura Sphere | Fighting |
| 3 | Mega Blaziken | Counter | Aura Sphere | Fighting |
| 4 | Primal Groudon | Mud Shot | Precipice Blades | Ground |
| 5 | Mega Mewtwo Y | Counter | Focus Blast | Fighting |
| 6 | Keldeo (Resolute Forme) | Low Kick | Secret Sword | Fighting |
| 7 | Mega Falinks | Counter | Brick Break | Fighting |
| 8 | Mega Gallade | Low Kick | Sacred Sword | Fighting |
| 9 | Shadow Groudon | Mud Shot | Precipice Blades | Ground |
| 10 | Mega Garchomp | Mud Shot | Earth Power | Ground |
Counter rankings are from the GO Hub Dialga counters database.
Easier-to-build Dialga counters
If you don’t have the Pokémon above, these non-Legendary options rank in GO Hub’s top 30:
- Fighting: Lucario (Force Palm / Aura Sphere), the highest-ranked counter without a Mega or Shadow form. Also Shadow Conkeldurr (Force Palm / Dynamic Punch), Shadow Blaziken (Counter / Aura Sphere), Shadow Gallade (Low Kick / Sacred Sword), Shadow Hariyama and Shadow Machamp (both with Dynamic Punch).
- Ground: Shadow Excadrill (Mud-Slap / Scorching Sands), Shadow Rhyperior (Mud-Slap / Drill Run), Shadow Garchomp (Mud Shot / Earth Power).
- Mega options: Mega Heracross (Counter / Close Combat), Mega Swampert (Mud Shot / Earthquake).
Regular (non-Shadow) Conkeldurr, Machamp and Excadrill still deal super effective damage, but they rank lower, so plan on bringing an extra player or two. For why the Shadow versions hit harder, see Shadow vs. Purified.
What the Community Has Documented
- Group size: GO Hub’s estimates put the minimum at 2 trainers with top counters, 3 to 5 as comfortable, and 6 or more as easy. Its raid guide suggests 4 or more if your counters are lower level.
- Estimates, not guarantees: GO Hub notes its faint and time-to-win numbers leave out Friendship and Mega damage boosts, so a real lobby usually goes faster than the simulation.
- Possible moves: GO Hub lists Dialga’s moves as Metal Claw and Dragon Breath, plus Iron Head, Draco Meteor and Thunder. Steel-type counters like Lucario and Excadrill resist both Steel and Dragon moves. Dragon-type counters like Mega Garchomp and Mega Latios take super effective damage from Draco Meteor.
- Shiny odds: players have long reported Shiny Legendary raid odds of roughly 1 in 20.
- IV floor: raid catches are widely reported to have at least 10 in each IV. That puts an unboosted Dialga between 2217 and 2307 CP, and a boosted one between 2771 and 2884 CP.
Practical Application: Pick Your Counters by the Weather
Weather affects the fight and the catch separately, so check it before you raid.
Example: it’s Cloudy. Your Fighting counters get a weather boost and hit harder, so a group of three with Lucario and Conkeldurr can finish faster. But Dialga is not boosted in Cloudy weather, so your catch is Level 20 with a maximum of 2307 CP. On a Windy or Snowy day the reverse happens: your Fighting team loses its boost, but Dialga is caught at Level 25 with a maximum of 2884 CP.
A few rules follow from this:
- Bring only Fighting and Ground. With eight resistances, a strong off-type attacker deals much less damage here than it would against most bosses.
- Prefer Steel-type Fighting and Ground attackers. Lucario and Excadrill resist Dialga’s Steel and Dragon moves, so they last longer.
- Use your Mega first. A Mega Evolution boosts damage for everyone in the lobby, so activate it before joining.
- Check CP on the catch screen. 2307 (or 2884 when boosted) is a 100% IV standard Dialga. Use a Golden Razz Berry if you see it.
- Save passes for the Raid Hour on October 14. If you can’t make it, Dialga stays in raids until Tuesday, October 20.
If you raided Yveltal last week, the Yveltal raid guide covers that week’s counters.
Tracking Your Dialga Catches
After a Raid Hour it is easy to lose track of which Dialga was the high-IV one, which you planned to power up, and which to transfer.
A tracker like GoDex helps. Scan a catch screenshot to read CP and IVs, tag the keeper, and mark a Shiny as soon as you get one.
A scan also shows PvP rank. A Dialga with high IVs is great for raids but can rank poorly in Ultra League, where a low Attack IV scores better.
